You’re already making a difference in the lives of young children—now it’s time to invest in yourself. Whether you’re ready to take on new leadership roles, earn new credentials, or deepen your practice, Pennsylvania offers the support, training, and resources to help you grow. From scholarships and apprenticeships to career pathways and professional development, everything you need to elevate your future in early childhood education is right here.

Professional Development Organizations (PDOs)

Professional Development Organizations (PDOs) are structured learning opportunities that help early childhood educators improve their teaching practices, meet state requirements, and grow their careers. In Pennsylvania, these programs are supported by The Pennsylvania Key, which provides access to high-quality training that aligns with state and national standards.

Educators in PA must complete ongoing training every year to remain in good standing—and PDOs make that possible while also supporting long-term professional growth.

Credentials (CDA, Pennsylvania Key, and More)

CDA – Child Development Associate

Pennsylvania offers several financial aid options to help reduce or eliminate the cost of earning a credential or degree:

  • A nationally recognized credential and one of the most common entry points into the Early Childhood Education field
  • Focuses on competency in working with infants, toddlers, or preschool-aged children
  • Requires coursework, work experience, observation, and a portfolio
  • In Pennsylvania, CDA credential holders are placed at Level A or A-Plus on the ECE Career Pathway

Pennsylvania Key Credentials

The Pennsylvania Key supports a range of stackable credentials that align with the state’s Early Childhood Education Career Pathway:

  • Director’s Credential – For center directors and administrators
  • School-Age Professional Credential – For those working with children ages 5–12
  • Infant Mental Health Endorsement – Specialized focus on social-emotional development
  • Inclusion Endorsement – For educators supporting children with disabilities or developmental delays

Act 48 and Teacher Certification Requirements

  • Certified teachers must complete 180 hours of professional development every five years
  • Pennsylvania Key PDOs often satisfy these requirements, ensuring compliance and skill development

Credentials help educators move up the pathway, qualify for better jobs, and provide higher quality care.

Career Advancement Options

There are multiple ways to grow your career in Early Childhood Education beyond entry-level teaching roles. Pennsylvania’s Early Childhood Education Career Pathway outlines clear steps and levels for advancement.
